We take in a large cohort of trainee teachers each year at Tong High School. The trainees come from a range of local universities including Leeds University, LMU, Huddersfield University, Bradford College and Sheffield Hallam University.
Some of the trainees are on a PGCE course which means they do a placement in two different schools, each placement being approximately 12 weeks long. Other trainees choose to do the GTP course which means they spend a whole year at Tong High School and do other mini placements in a primary school and another secondary school.
All departments at Tong High School host ITT students, who work alongside the other members of staff helping them in lessons and eventually the trainees take over the lessons themselves. A series of tutorial sessions are also run in school so that the trainees receive input about educational issues. All our trainees always comment on the extremely supportive environment at Tong High School and are appreciative of the assistance they get from all members of staff. Every year we get more requests to take additional trainees as the programme at Tong High School is highly valued.
Many members of staff undertake the role of mentor for the trainees which involves guiding and supporting them through their teaching practice. This is an invaluable part of the programme as mentors work tirelessly to ensure the future generation of teachers is well equipped to do the job.
Tong High School is also a Partnership Development school which means it works in a cluster of 5 schools on various projects agreed with the Training and Development Agency in order to increase ITT capacity. This involves working closely with ITT providers as well as doing outreach work with several schools in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
Tomorrow’s Teachers Today offers pupils the opportunity to find out about teaching. Visits to schools and teacher training institutions are arranged and pupils are able to do some teaching themselves after doing preparation and lesson planning with their host teacher.

The Student Associate Scheme enables undergraduates to do a placement in school to see if they wish to follow a career as a teacher. Many of the associates we have at Tong have completed their degrees and this scheme helps them to build experience before doing a PGCE or GTP
