AS Design Technology – Food

This course gives students the opportunity to develop their creative, technical and practical skills through a series of product investigation, design and manufacturing activities when using food.

On successful completion of this course, learners may progress onto employment e.g. working in a test kitchen developing new products or onto Higher Education.

Course Content

This course consists of 4 units spread over 2 years.

Year one

Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application [externally assessed]

Unit 2: Learning through designing and making [internally assessed]

Year two

Unit 3: Design and manufacture [externally assessed].

Unit 4: Designing and making practice [internally assessed].

Students will study nutrition in depth in unit one and this will inform their making and product development. This knowledge is built on in unit 2, coursework, where diet and lifestyle choices are examined in relation to health guidelines.

Unit 3 deals with food science and manufacture and unit 4 is a design and make coursework project.

Making is a key element of this course.

The assessment of the course is 50% Coursework and 50% Examination.

Each unit is equally weighted with the written examinations taking place in May.
