Mathematics has a significant and never ending role in all our lives. The primary goal of the Department is to deliver it in the most effective and enjoyable way possible, so that students throughout the school obtain a positive experience from their maths education.

What students gain:

Key Stage 3

All KS3 students are set according to their ability and follow an engaging learning scheme, which focuses on improving conceptual understanding of basic maths. This stage focuses on maximising pupils’ potential for a solid foundation of knowledge to build on in KS4 for their GCSE exams.

Students work in groups, as well as in pairs and individually. A range of resources are available to them, including access to the Internet, via mini laptops. Regular assessments ensure effective monitoring of all pupils’ progress.

Key Stage 4

At KS4, students follow the Edexcel GCSE course. All are encouraged to achieve their maximum potential and are entered for the correct examination tier, according to ability. All students now follow a linear Mathematics GCSE which means that they sit all of their exams at the end of Year 11. Students will sit three exam papers at the end of the year, two calculator papers and one non calculator paper and all are 1 hour 30 minute exam papers.

Key Stage 5

At KS5, pupils can take A-Level Maths or they can continue to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding so that they can secure a Level 2 grade C or its equivalent. We are currently looking to broaden our range of provision at Level 3. 

Students are given complex problems to solve, developing a higher understanding of mathematical techniques, which can help with other subjects, particularly Science. They also attend external Taster Sessions and local university lectures.

There has been a significant increase in pupil uptake for KS5 Mathematics in recent years and this is a trend that we are confident will continue into the future.

How we teach:

We set challenging targets, with high expectations of every student, and ensure they all achieve their full potential. We aim to provide a smooth transition for students between Key Stages and ensure progression in teaching and learning throughout their time at Tong.

Recognising that pupils learn in many ways, our teaching methods offer a variety of approaches that engage and motivate all of them and demand their active participation. This is because we see a clear correlation between student enjoyment and success.
